I am often approached by friends who have just hung their own shingle be it virtual or brick and mortar about getting their social media marketing program started. The social media marketing industry is driven by trend so it tends to change at the click of a mouse. As a rule, I recommend starting with the blog first. A blog is the navigator as to what you should share and social media marketing is how you should share that information. Here are a couple of things to remember when writing your own business blog.

-Make sure that your blog is interesting and grabs your reader in the beginning. The average person only spends 96 seconds reading a blog. Try to steer away from mission statements and internal company practices. 

-Use pictures or videos in your blog content to help engage your reader. Websites such as photobucket.com offer a free subscription and access to royalty-free content.

-Don’t over think your writing. Have a topic in mind before your write. Set a timer for one hour and devote your time entirely on writing that blog. If you find yourself stumped about a topic involve your employees and bounce some ideas off them. After all, they are the ones closest to your customers.

-Announcements about awards or new products are a great way to showcase your company’s success, but be sure that there is value for the reader in your post. Just like in sales, most readers want to know what’s in it for them.

-Consider hiring a social media marketing company to help get you started. Most offer a trial period and short-term contracts.
